Sports with Special Olympics in Leinster regional also activities with the Meath Arch Club for people with learning disability.
While I like watersports such as sailing and canoeing, basketball is my next favourite form of keeping fit. I played the game for many years and when things got a bit too fast for my ageing legs, I did a few coaching courses. Rather than go to mainstream competition, I came across some people involved with Special Olympics .I’ve now been with the organisation for ten years as a volunteer and it has been a most rewarding experience.
It gives me great pleasure to coach these special athletes and see them achieve goals beyond their expectations. They are always willing to learn new things and also gives me an excuse to do some running!
See some pictures of our clubs male and female teams!
Together we have traveled to many countries and usually return with the medals.
Some of our players went to Shanghai in 2007 for the worldgames and returned proudly with silver medals! They also were in Carolina ,Belgium and Luxemburg. See also some of our ten pin bowlers after getting their medals from Special Olympics Leinster in 2008!
Check out www.specialolympics.ie if you would like to get involved as a volunteer or an athlete in Ireland. There are many clubs all around the country who can use your help!
As Special Olympics was started in the USA it was no surprise that in 2003 they had the biggest delegation at the world games in Dublin. This was the first time the world games were held outside the USA and I’ll never forget the buzz in the whole country at the time!
Check it out!!
